Gastroscopy is a visual examination of the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract using a narrow, flexible tube called a gastroscope.
A gastroscopy (or upper GI Endoscopy) is a safe and routine procedure that allows your specialist to examine your upper gastrointestinal system in detail.
During the procedure, you will be given sedation (or a general anaesthetic). Sedation is used to help you relax and better tolerate the examination. Your doctor (specialist) will use a special instrument called a gastroscope (fibre optic lens) which has a camera and light source in the tip.
The gastroscope will capture images of your oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum, giving your doctor (specialist) valuable information about their condition. Special instruments can be passed down the gastroscope to obtain a biopsy (a small tissue sample) or remove polyps, and treat bleeding vessels and ulcers).
All tissue samples are sent to the laboratory for analysis. The procedure is also used to remove polyps, treat bleeding vessels and ulcers by internal injection or diathermy.
